Red Bumps on Skin

If you have red bumps on your skin, you may have a number of conditions that are causing the red bumps.  First, it may be an allergic reaction to something.  Think back to what your skin has come into contact with.  You may have contact dermatitis if your skin touched something that bothers it.  For example, did you use a new lotion, soap, or laundry detergent?  Did you wear a particular type of fabric?  Some fabrics can be irritating to the skin.  Try to wear natural fabrics, like cotton.  Polyester will irritate some people's skin.  Some detergents are also gentler to the skin, such as All or Dreft.

This appears to be contact dermatitis, or a skin allergy to something that has been in contact with the child's skin.

Secondly, do you have eczema?  My son has eczema, and it has been a nightmare.  He has had red patchy spots at times, as well as lots of red bumps on the skin.  The worst part about it is that it is extremely itchy.  He had to wear socks on his hands to bed so that he didn't cut his skin while he is sleeping.  Using a lotion like Aquaphor helps to keep the skin moist, but does not actually rid the body of the bumps.  It took us nearly three months to get into a dermatologist.  Once we started at the dermatologist, we were given several different medications, and finally a medication called Protopic really cleared his skin.  We no longer need the Protopic, but now just coat him in Aquaphor on a daily basis.

This child is suffering from a very itchy and bothersome skin condition called eczema.  The individual causes of eczema are unknown, but are typically treated by a dermatologist with topical medications.

Third, could these red bumps on your skin be bug bites or bed bug bites?  You may want to wash all of your bedclothes in very hot water just to be sure.  Sealing your mattress in plastic will also kill the bedbugs.

Does this look similar to your red bumps?  This is an example of what bedbug bites look like.

Finally, could the red bumps be the dreaded chicken pox?  Have you had the vaccine or had chicken pox before?  Are the bumps extremely itchy?

The chicken pox rash typically will begin on the neck, scalp, face, limbs, and torso and will become blister-like over the next 12-24 hours, finally crusting over.  It is very itchy and bothersome, but if scratched can cause scarring.

If the condition of red bumps that you are experiencing does not clear up quickly, see a doctor.  Doctors have a lot of experience diagnosing many different skin issues and concerns, and they can help you both diagnose the bumps and treat the bumps.  If they are spreading, it is especially important to get to the doctor as quickly as possible to save yourself further irritation.
